The Curse of the Queen’s Blue Wedding Outfit

When it comes to weddings there are many superstitions, traditions and rules one must be aware of. As a guest, you should never upstage the bride, be that by wearing white or a gown that is deemed too extravagant. Of course, the Royals try the hardest to dress appropriately for any occasion and a royal wedding is no exception. Her Majesty is no stranger to dressing carefully, proven with her choice of brooch meeting President Biden. With the eyes of the world firmly fixed on what the bride will wear, it is the role of the other members of the family to dress aptly without taking the attention away. Sometimes they do this marvellously and well, sometimes you have Beatrice and Eugenie at William and Kate’s wedding!

During her almost 70 year-long reign, Queen Elizabeth has found her perfect fashion formula. Bright colours are worn by the Queen for two reasons, because she likes them and because they mean she can always be spotted in a crowd. In a documentary to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, said this, “She needs to stand out for people to be able to say ‘I saw the Queen’.”

Weddings are joyous occasions, perfect for a lovely pop of colour. And it would seem the Queen has, historically, had a habit of wearing blue at weddings, however, this may not always go well.

Now, the following is all just a bit of a funny conspiracy theory so take it lightly!

The majority of times the Queen has worn blue to the wedding the couple ends up divorced. No seriously, it has happened at least four times. Let’s break them down.

For the wedding of her sister Princess Margaret to Lord Snowdon in 1960 the Queen wore a belted bright turquoise gown made of silk and lace with a matching bolero jacket and hat. This is the first known time she wears blue for a family wedding. In 1978, after almost 20 years of turbulent marriage, Margaret and Snowdon announce their divorce.

1973 saw the nuptials of Princess Anne to Mark Phillips. For her only stint as the mother of the bride, the Queen wore a royal blue dress coat with, of course, a matching hat. The couple had a rocky marriage that eventually ending in divorce in 1992 after initially separating in 1989.

The most famous wedding of the 20th century took place between Prince Charles and a young Diana Spencer in 1981. With the entire globe watching, the Queen once again opted for blue. This time in a lighter shade with a matching hat, accessorized with a pearl necklace and brooch. After obvious years of strain and discontent, the couple would separate in 1992, finalizing their divorce in 1996.

The Queen was the mother of the groom once more in 1986, this time for the wedding of Andrew to Sarah Ferguson. Blue was once more the chosen colour for her tiered dress. It is no surprise she matched the forget-me-not blue dress with a matching hat. Much like Charles and Diana, this royal couple would also separate in 1992, finalising their divorce in 1996.

Technically the outfit worn by the Queen to the 2008 wedding of Peter Phillips and Autumn Kelly isn’t blue, instead, it’s grey with gold embellishment. However, in most photos, it does look blue. The couple announced their separation in 2019 and finalised their divorce in June 2021.

Perhaps at this point, she’d realised what was going wrong as the Queen began to choose other colours for weddings. Yellow for William and Kate, pink for Zara and Mike and green for Harry and Meghan. However, she did bring out blue again for the weddings of both York sisters, Eugenie and Beatrice. For their sake, we hope this is all just a big coincidence and not an actual curse!
