Oscars 2021 - Top Trends From the Red Carpet

The hotly awaited 93rd Annual Academy Awards took place last night, and, as always, many of us had our eyes on the red carpet. This year, even though we are still very much in the midst of a global pandemic, the Academy wanted as many nominees to attend in person in Los Angeles, meaning that, for the first time in about a year, we had a proper red carpet to look at.

Given that it was the Oscars, otherwise known as the most important night in the film industry, the fashion is expected to live up to that but...it was actually rather lacklustre. Regardless, let’s take a look at some of the top trends from the red carpet last night:

Perhaps the most notable trend from this year's Academy Awards is the surprising return of the keyhole/peep tummy hole. Y2K has had its comeback in recent years, but please let this not be the early 2010s coming back into fashion. Alas, it was clearly a popular style with Vanessa Kirby, Zendaya and several more favouring this subtly cheeky look.

Speaking of the early 2010s coming back into style, crop tops were also weirdly popular last night. It's more expected to see this sort of style on a red carpet like the Grammys where the fashion tends to be more out there and experimental, but for Carey Mulligan and Andra Day it somehow sort of worked!

There is one red carpet style that never seems to go out of fashion, the deep V. It’s so popular in fact that one can expect to see it on every single red carpet more than once. So, of course, it was pretty popular this year and could be seen on the likes of Halle Berry, Amanda Seyfried and Regina King.

Generally speaking, most people’s eyes are focused on the ladies on the red carpet as, most of the time, menswear can be basic and repetitive. But, if there’s something to celebrate at this year's awards it’s the wide variety of men’s looks. Lakeith Stanfield in a 1970s style jumpsuit, Leslie Odom Jr in an Oscars appropriate gold ensemble and Colman Domingo in bright fuschia were just some of the best looks.
