Christian Siriano Kicks Off New York Fashion Week

You blink and all of a sudden New York Fashion Week is here once again sparking an entire month of runway shows across North America and Europe. The first official show of the month is ever going to be one of the most anticipated and as such all eyes were on Christian Siriano’s Fall/Winter 2023 in New York City yesterday evening.

Extravagant with elegant silhouettes, this was a typical Siriano collection. Filled with red carpet-appropriate ensembles and a few looks here and there that feel somewhat misplaced and confused. One gets the impression that Siriano may struggle to edit down his collections, after all, the looks are all of high quality, and yet not all fit well with one another in the context of an entire collection. However, this is one of his more connected shows with a reasonably clear and clean flow from look to look.

Hues of purple, yellow and black make up the majority of the garments with one pop of baby blue and one, somewhat out-of-place, golden design.

The inspiration for the collection is obvious once you are made aware of it. Greeting each guest is a photo of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly (from Breakfast At Tiffany’s) on their seat. “We’re calling it Audrey Hepburn’s rose garden, but at midnight or 2 a.m. So it’s a little darker, a little sexier,” said Siriano of the inspiration. The over-exaggerated lines married with delicate fabrics and smart draping certainly give the classy and chic expression Golightly herself spent years chasing.

While the following should be the norm at fashion weeks, Siriano’s show featured a handful of plus-size models who were placed in similar looks to every other model. Refusing to place his larger models in oversized looks which hide their figure is a positive step in the right direction from Siriano and one which other brands should seek to replicate.
