3 Big Ways the 1970s are Making a Comeback This Summer

Walking around my city, it sometimes feels like we just landed back in the 70s when it comes to clothing. And honestly, I’m not complaining! Years ago, I would have laughed at you if you’d told me that I would be into these kinds of clothes—but now I feel like most people can seriously respect the clothing that came out of this era. And they would have good reason to do so; the silhouettes are super flattering on many body types, and most importantly, are very comfortable. If you’ve watched one of the recent videos on the Eternal Goddess YouTube Channel, you might have seen some fashion icons from the 70s come by.

In this article, I’ll be looking at what 70s details we can find in current trends.

Flared Jeans

I’ve been saying it for the last 5 years—flared jeans should be back in fashion. When I tried to purchase them at the time, I struggled a lot, especially with me being overly tall. However, when I finally found the perfect burgundy corduroy pair, everyone asked me if I was going to a themed 70s party. The disrespect of my immaculate fashion sense was absolutely unbelievable for me. But now I have finally received justice: flared trousers are everywhere and for all shapes and sizes. Flared jeans are the ABSOLUTE best type of jeans; they usually rock a high waist, are tight around the bottom and thighs, and flare out from the knees. The fun thing about these trousers is that I have yet to find a person that doesn’t look good in them. Anyone who disagrees may calmly approach me for a heated debate.

Flowy Dresses

YES. Any day. Any time. These dresses can be casual, chic, ethereal, whatever you want depending on how you style them. Or you can keep it simple; throw it on and you’ll have a great outfit no matter what. With swooshy skirts and pretty patterns, these dresses give off all the cottage core feelings you may have ever dreamed of. Think Kate Bush in her Wuthering Heights video. Or you may want to go for a witchy Stevie Nicks look as we can see below! The best thing about these dresses is that they’re super easy to buy vintage! When you walk into any vintage store, you’re sure to find a flowy flower dress that suits all of your needs, measurements and preferences, whilst doing both the environment and your looks a very kind favour.

Sweater Vests

I was honestly not expecting this iconic piece to make a comeback, but it makes me extremely happy nonetheless. Vests have always intrigued me, and I’m not sure why. In the early 2000s, I remember wearing them as a kid, but stopping at a certain age because I thought they looked absolutely despicable. Now, I can really appreciate the amazing looks my mother put together for me (sorry for not trusting you, mom). I think it’s just such a great way to add an extra little detail or personality to an outfit. As the pictures below show, they’re the cutest when paired with some flared jeans and a good chunky boot. You can never go wrong with that.

Of course, 70s fashion being “in” now, doesn’t mean that you can only wear this style now. The article is just meant to showcase some popular trends that can be seen in the streets of many places today! That’s what great about fashion; I love seeing inspirations from past eras with a modern twist on them. The rise of Y2K fashion in the last year or so is also closely connected to what was popular in the 70s—and you should know I love a good throwback.

If this article has convinced you to become a 70s style icon, I would definitely recommend you look at some of the Instagram handles I linked below. They can bring that inspiration you may be looking for in your daily life.
